Description

Redfern House is a late 18th-century house that has undergone some alterations and additions in the 20th century. It is constructed from regularly coursed squared gritstone with ashlar dressings, featuring quoins, coped gables with plain kneelers, ashlar gable stacks, and a roof covered with Welsh slate. The house has a T-plan layout, with the east elevation comprising two storeys and two bays.

The central doorway is framed by a massive stone surround with a deep lintel that has an incised margin for an inscription, although it is currently unlettered. Above the lintel, there is a cornice mould, and at the first-floor level, a blind semicircular headed opening with a flush frame, imposts, and an advanced keyblock can be found. On either side of the doorway, there are stacked 3-light metal casements set within the flush surrounds of former 2-light flush mullioned windows. The coved eaves band is returned at the ends of the building. At the rear, there is a lower gabled range in the center of the main range, which features a single flush-mullioned opening at the first-floor level.
