Description
West View is a house dating from the mid-18th century, with early 19th and 20th-century alterations and additions. It is constructed of coursed squared gritstone with ashlar dressings, featuring quoins, moulded kneelers, coped gables, and gable ashlar stacks. The roof is covered with stone slate and concrete tiles. This T-plan house has a lower two-storey range at the rear and consists of two storeys and attics above a basement, with three bays in total.
The symmetrical front elevation includes a central doorway with an inserted 18th-century timber doorcase that has a broken pediment, replacing an original 18th-century door surround. There are 20th-century glazed double doors with glazing bars, and above them, a semicircular fanlight with decorative glazing bars. On either side of the doorway are stacked glazing bar sash windows with six panes by four panes, set in flush stone surrounds. The window surround above the doorway is moulded and slightly advanced, with the lintel featuring a central keyblock.
On the south gable, there is a 20th-century single-storey lean-to that conceals a further 20th-century flat-roofed extension. The lower rear wing has two 2-light flush-mullioned windows on the north side wall, with the upper windows being taller than the lower ones. There is a similar window at attic level in the north gable of the main range. A blocked ground-floor doorway at the south end of the east gable has a massive surround and lintel.
Inside, the house features 18th-century two-panelled doors throughout, complete with architraves and picture rails. One of the ground-floor rooms has an 18th-century hearth with corbelled jambs that support a massive lintel. The staircase, leading to the attic level, has turned balusters and a moulded handrail.
