Description
Knotcross Farmhouse is a house dating from the early 17th century, with some alterations and additions made in the 20th century. It is constructed from coursed squared and rubble gritstone, featuring ashlar dressings, coped gables with moulded kneelers, a central ridge stack, and a concrete tiled roof. The house has a T-plan layout with a central lobby entrance.
The south elevation is two storeys high with attics and consists of three bays. The central doorway is set within a chamfered quoined surround and has a substantial lintel beneath a drip mould. To the west, there is a restored three-light recessed chamfered mullioned window, and to the east, a similar four-light window, both also beneath drip moulds. On the first floor, a small single-light opening is located above the doorway, flanked by restored four-light recessed chamfered mullioned windows, with a further two-light window at the west end. All the joinery, including a planked door with a glazed panel in the upper half, is of 20th-century date and stained.
The west gable features a single 17th-century light with a moulded surround at the apex. The rear wing has two and three-light chamfered mullioned windows without hoodmoulds, and there is a 20th-century flat-roofed infill extension between the rear range and the western part of the main range.
Inside, the farmhouse has heavily beamed ceilings throughout, with exposed floor joists. The central stack includes two hearths: one in the western hall with a wide cambered lintel, and the other in the eastern parlour with a more modestly sized plain surround. There is 17th-century square panelling in a first-floor bedroom, along with the remnants of a 17th-century winder stair leading to the attic floor.
