Description

This is an early 17th-century outbuilding, originally a farm building, located in Wadshelf, Brampton. The building features coursed Coal Measures sandstone walls topped with a concrete tiled roof, which replaced earlier stone slates. The east elevation is two storeys high and five bays wide, with the southern bay being a later addition. It has simple door and window openings, each covered by substantial stone lintels, and planked doors. The west elevation has similar detailing, along with a centrally located double doorway with full-height double doors.

Inside, the building retains four cruck trusses; three are complete, while the fourth has lost its tie beam. These trusses support a single-purlin roof structure. The scarf-jointed purlins are notched into the backs of the cruck blades. Two trusses still have windbraces, with evidence of mortises indicating that braces were originally present on the other trusses. Collars and yokes are dovetail-lapped onto the cruck blade faces. The ridge purlin is set edge-on and clasped between the cruck blade heads. The trusses originally formed a closed structure; the southern truss was once an external wall, to which the present southern bay was added.
