Description

Rufford Farmhouse, including the attached boundary wall, is a farmhouse dating from the mid-19th century. It is constructed from regularly coursed squared gritstone with ashlar dressings. The building features advanced quoins, coped gables topped with ball finials on tapered stems (one finial is missing), moulded kneelers, and ashlar ridge and gable stacks. The roof is covered with graduated slate.

The south elevation is two storeys high and has three bays, creating a symmetrical appearance. The central doorway has massive flush jambs, a deep lintel, and a moulded and bracketed canopy. The door itself is a six-panel design, topped by a rectangular overlight. On either side of the doorway, the ground-floor windows are 20th-century three-light casements without glazing bars, set in moulded stone surrounds that are slightly shouldered. The first floor has three two-light casements, also in similar surrounds, with each casement asymmetrically divided into four panes.

At the west end of the rear pile, there is a single-storey wing that projects to the north. The low coursed masonry boundary wall with flat coping extends from the east side of the farmhouse, wrapping around to the east corner of the front range. This wall connects to a lower wall with chamfered coping, which is topped with spear-headed iron railings. There is an intermediate pier in front of the main doorway. The boundary wall rises to its former height and leads to a side gate, which also has spear-headed railings, and continues to join the house at the end of a sweep around to the rear of the front range.
