Description

Temperance House is a house, formerly a house and cottage, dating from the mid-18th century, with 20th-century alterations and a remodelled and extended section from 1982. It is constructed from coursed rubble Coal Measures Sandstone, with the front elevation now rendered, and features ashlar dressings, ridge and gable ashlar chimneys, and a Welsh slate roof. The building has a tall two-bay range with an attached lower L-plan range to the east.

The south elevation shows a taller range to the west, consisting of two bays with stacked three-light flush-mullioned windows in the western bay and a plain doorway in the eastern bay, which is set within a shallow pitched-roofed trelliswork porch adorned with decorative bargeboards. Above the doorway is an altered two-light flush-mullioned window, a restoration from the 20th century with 20th-century joinery. The lower gabled range to the east has stacked three-light flush-mullioned windows, with the ground-floor opening being taller than that on the first floor. The window frames are mainly of 20th-century joinery, and the door is a 20th-century design with three panels, the uppermost of which is now glazed.

The rear elevation features a brick gable stack and stacked three-light flush-mullioned windows, with the taller ground-floor opening retaining two glazing-bar casements. A massive door surround includes a deep lintel and a shallow bracketed hood, with a 20th-century door. There is a steep catslide-roofed extension attached to the west gable, which connects to the rear wall of the front range, and a small stone-slated lean-to is located to the east of the doorway. The interior has been altered, but the principal rooms in the taller two-bay range retain exposed spine beams and joists.
