Description

Wigley Hall is a house dating back to the 17th century, with additions from the 19th century and alterations in the 18th and 20th centuries. It is constructed of roughcast rubble Coal Measures sandstone with ashlar gritstone dressings, quoins, coped gables with moulded kneelers, and a concrete tiled roof with a central brick chimney stack. The building has a central lobby-entrance plan, set behind a remodelled front.

The south elevation has two storeys and five bays, presenting a symmetrical facade. A central doorway is sheltered by a shallow hood, featuring a deep lintel which incorporates a rectangular plaque with a stylised vestigial hood mould, forming part of a shouldered door surround. The doorway has a 20th-century half-glazed door. Flanking the doorway are altered 18th-century window openings beneath a continuous lintel band; the lintels are slightly advanced. The outermost ground-floor window openings are blocked, while the innermost have been deepened, with present sills lower than the partially concealed sill band. The upper floor window openings remain unaltered, all with 20th-century window frames featuring top-hung vents. A central pediment contains an oculus.

A single-bay lean-to is situated against the west gable, and a similar shallow-pitched lean-to against the rear wall appears to have replaced a smaller, steeper roofed version. The weathering drip mould from the original roof survives below two 17th-century single-light first-floor windows, now fitted with 20th-century side-hung casements.
