Description
Birley Grange Farmhouse is a 17th-century farmhouse, dated 1689, with 19th-century alterations and additions, and refurbished in 1977. It is constructed from coursed squared Coal Measures sandstone, with ashlar dressings, quoins, coped gables with moulded kneelers, ridge and gable stone stacks rebuilt in 1977, and a stone slated roof. The building has an end-lobby-entrance plan.
The south elevation is of two storeys and four bays. A doorway is located in the west end bay, featuring an advanced quoined surround reminiscent of Gibbsian style, though the remaining quoins are flush with the surrounding walling. A massive lintel above the doorway is similarly fashioned, with scrolled bracket motifs in relief; the lower part is flush with the walling, and below is a narrow, banded section with an integral square keyblock surmounted by a ball finial. The keyblock bears the inscription 'J T S 1689'. A C20 plank door is set within the opening. The elevation is punctuated by three two-light windows, originally mullioned, now fitted with C20 glazing bar casements. The window openings have advanced heads with a shallow hollow mould. A narrow band course links these heads and that of the doorway.
The rear elevation features a central offshut beneath a catslide roof, incorporating a circular staircase, the shape of which is reflected in the eastern side wall. A C19 lean-to was added to the west end of the main range at a right angle.
The interior has been altered, but retains exposed spine beams with run-out stops, a spiral stone staircase, and a fine parlour hearth featuring a moulded and jowelled surround supporting a pulvinated lintel with a moulded cornice or shallow mantel shelf above.
