Description

Fanshawe Gate Hall is a 17th-century farmhouse that has been remodelled and restored in the 20th century. It is constructed of regularly coursed squared coal measures sandstone with ashlar dressings, quoins, and a stone slated roof, topped with coped gables featuring moulded kneelers. The building has an L-shaped plan with a smaller, parallel range added to the rear.

The east elevation has two storeys and three bays, with an advanced gabled bay to the north. A central doorway, positioned where the two ranges meet, has a chamfered, quoined surround and a massive lintel supporting a two-light chamfer mullioned window above. The door itself is made of oak planks and features two small glazed panels. To the south of the doorway is a two-light chamfer mullioned window on the ground floor, above which is a three-light window of similar style on the first floor. Each south gable has two-light chamfer mullioned openings to both the ground and first floors. A three-light recessed chamfer mullioned window, with a plain dripmould, is set into the south wall of the rear crosswing.

The interior has been altered but retains a good ground floor hearth, as well as visible 17th-century spine beams with run-out stops and joists.
