Description

Totley Hall is a house, dating from 1623, with substantial additions from the 1880s, 1890s, and 1950s, now part of Sheffield Hallam University. It is constructed of coursed rubble and coursed squared stone with ashlar dressings and a stone slate roof. The roof is punctuated by four stone stacks, two on the side walls, one on the ridge, and one on the rear wall. All have lozenge-shaped flues. Quoins and coped gables with kneelers are present. The building is arranged around an E-plan. The windows are mostly stone mullioned cross casements.

The 19th-century central gabled wing features a five-light window on each of the two floors. To the left, a recessed three-bay section includes a smaller five-light window and two two-light casements on the upper floor. Below, a five-light window has a cornice, and to its right is a Tudor arched doorway with a datestone inscribed "G N 1623" above. A 17th-century wing on the left side features a 19th-century two-storey square stone bay window with a three-light window on each floor. Within the gable is a 17th-century two-light window with a chamfered mullion and label mould. To the right of the central gable is a recessed bay with a two-light window on the upper floor and two 19th-century transomed single windows below. A further 19th-century wing has a chamfered plinth and two horizontal bands of stone detail. It contains two two-light windows with strapwork panels between them, and above, a small double round-headed window with a label mould. Below is a six-light window. The right return includes a basement with a door to the left and an octagonal corner tower to the right. The rear elevation features a 19th-century billiard room by John Dodsley Webster, containing a four-light stained glass window. The interior has not been inspected.
