Description
This is a farm outbuilding located to the north-west of Pratt Hall, dating from the early 18th century. It is constructed from coursed rubble Coal Measures sandstone, featuring ashlar dressings, quoins, coped gables with moulded kneelers, and a 20th-century corrugated sheet roof.
The south-east elevation has two storeys and a single bay, with central doorways on both the ground and first floors. There is a second ground-floor opening next to the central door, which has been blocked to create a louvred window. The first-floor doorway is framed by a massive lintel and substantial quoined surround, and it is accessed by a two-flight stone staircase that includes a half-landing with a dog kennel. Above the doorway, a stone hood creates a shelf beneath an apex two-light flush-mullioned window, which now has 6-pane casements but may have originally had entry holes for doves, with the 'hood' serving as a perch. The north-west gable features a blocked taking-in door at the first-floor level.
