Description

The Old Barracks is a farm outbuilding dating from the early 17th century. It is constructed from coursed rubble Coal Measures Sandstone with ashlar dressings, featuring quoins, a coped north gable with moulded kneelers, and a finial platform, topped with a stone slated roof. The east elevation has four storeys and three bays, built into rising ground, allowing access to the upper two floors from the higher western side. There are two ground-floor openings; one on the west end has a quoined surround and a massive lintel, while the other on the south end is a plain insertion. Between these doors is a single-light 17th-century window with a moulded surround. Above this, there is another single-light 17th-century opening, followed by an undivided rectangular opening, and at the third-floor level, a framed timber three-light mullioned window with internal shutters. The west elevation features a flight of stone steps leading to the entry for the third floor, with a landing above an arched entry to the floor below. The south gable, which overlooks the garden of Cutthorpe Hall, is adorned with chamfered mullioned windows and dripmoulds. Inside, the roof is of queenstrut construction, with trusses supporting single side purlins and a diagonally set ridge purlin, and the two trusses have windbraces on either side. The interior has been originally plastered throughout.
