Description

The Dower House is a house built in the mid-17th century, with alterations made in the mid-19th century and some remodelling in the 20th century. It is constructed from coursed rubble Coal Measures Sandstone, featuring quoins, a chamfered low plinth in parts, ashlar dressings, coped gables with moulded kneelers, gable and ridge brick stacks, and a stone slated roof. The house has a lobby-entrance plan and the south-east elevation consists of two storeys and attics, with five bays. The three bays on the south-west end are less altered than the remaining two bays.

The central bay features a doorway set against the ridge stack, which is quoined and has a complex double roll moulding around it. Above the massive lintel is a hood mould with label stops. To the south-west, there are three stacked, slightly staggered, 3-light chamfered mullioned windows with drip moulds. Further south-west, there are two enlarged ground-floor chamfered mullioned windows, both showing signs of 19th-century renewal, above which are two 19th-century glazing bar sashes with 4 x 4 panes within flush stone surrounds.

The attic level has two gabled dormers, each with a 2-light chamfered mullioned window beneath a drip mould. Between the two gables is a shallow parapet with a stone spout. The two bays on the north-east end have plain single-light openings, except for one wide 4-paned window. The rear elevation features two gabled ranges extending north-westwards, with the shallower range containing a late 17th-century 2-light mullioned window at first-floor level and a 17th-century single-light window at ground-floor level.
