Description

This is a farm outbuilding located to the southeast of Birley Hay Farmhouse, dating from the early 17th century. It is constructed from coursed rubble coal measures sandstone, featuring quoins, and has a pantiled roof with stone slated eaves. The building is single storey with overlofts and has a north elevation that consists of five bays. The three bays at the eastern end are set forward beneath an extended catslide roof. There is a plain doorway at the eastern end, with two other double openings without doors in the remaining two bays of the advanced section. The last two bays have an open front supported by a cast iron column set on former grindstones.

Inside, the advanced bays create a short aisle supported by two full height posts or arcade piers. These carry an arcade plate and are braced both longitudinally and laterally. The tie beams of the roof trusses rest on the jowelled head of the posts, with the tie beam for the advanced section morticed into the outer face of the post. The remaining two bays feature a cruck truss that supports a single purlin roof, with wind braces on the southern side. Originally, this truss had a tie beam that has since been removed, leaving a yoke to support the ridge purlin. This style of advanced bay construction is also found at Malthouse Farm in Eckington and Manor Farm Barn in Dronfield.
