Description

ASHOVER SK36NW HIGH ASHES LANE 1264-0/5/52 (East side) Outbuilding to west of High Ashes Farmhouse

GV II

Farm outbuilding, formerly stable and cowhouse. Dated 1844. Regularly coursed squared gritstone, with channel tooling, ashlar dressings, coped gables with moulded kneelers, stone slates and concrete tiles. East elevation has gabled 2-storey range to centre, flanked by single-storey ranges with hipped gables, each of 3 bays. Central range with tall wide quoined doorway beneath a dated stone lintel. Above, a stilted semicircular headed opening with radiating glazing bars to the fanlight. Above, a rectangular perch, with 6 openings serving an attic dovecote with 6 entry holes. Flanking ranges each originally with 3 doorways, giving access to standings for cattle, all with massive stone frames, and with each of the central doorways having become a window, and now blocked below sill level. Planked stable doors to remaining doorways. Rear elevation with flight of stone steps to taking-in doorway to central gabled range. Listed for Group Value.
