Description

Toll Bar Cottage is a toll house built in the late 18th century, with 19th-century additions and alterations made in 1992. The building is constructed from regularly coursed rubble gritstone, featuring quoins, coped gables on the earlier part, brick gabled chimneys, and a roof covered with stone and Welsh slate. The south-east elevation has two storeys and two bays, with the north-east bay being an addition. There is a doorway at the north-east end of the earlier bay, which has a massive lintel and a quoined surround, although the door is obscured by boarding on the south-west side. The windows on the earlier bay are staggered 2-light flush-mullioned, with the upper floor window similar to that of the ground floor, but the window frames have been removed. The later bay features stacked window openings with flush surrounds and no window frames, along with a blocked single-light ground-floor opening at the south-west end. The rear elevation has a long catslide roof over a single-storey offshoot, which includes a single-light 18th-century window with a flush surround on the rear wall of the earlier bay. There is also a lower lean-to range with a separate roof on the later bay. The interior is not accessible. The Birkin Lane Turnpike was a feeder route that connected with the Chesterfield and Matlock Turnpike.
