Description
Spann Carr Windmill Tower is a four-storey circular tower, built in 1807. Constructed of coursed squared gritstone with tooled dressings, it stands on Matlock Road, Ashover. The tower tapers upwards and features an east-facing doorway at ground level. First-floor level has two doorways facing north and south, all with substantial diagonally tooled jambs and deep lintels; each originally had a flight of stone steps. Numerous rectangular window openings, originally containing small-paned metal windows (one of which remains), are present. The interior has been stripped of its machinery and fittings, but retains four hearths which emerge at two vents at the third-floor level. The mill was built by James and Matthew Beresford of Hazelhurst Farm and was later adapted to steam power; an engine house and chimney, now demolished, were added at that time.
