Description
Hardwick Farmhouse (west) is a farmhouse dating from the early 17th century, with alterations and additions made in the 19th century. It is constructed of coursed squared gritstone with ashlar dressings, featuring coped gables, a central ridge stack, and gable stacks on the additions. The roofs are covered with Welsh slate and stone slate, along with some corrugated sheeting.
The south elevation of the farmhouse consists of two storeys and three bays, with a lower single-bay offshoot at each end. Originally designed with a central baffle-entry plan, it has been altered to provide an end-entry in what was once a window position. The central doorway has been blocked and infilled, featuring a rough quoined surround, with the upper part of the doorway widened to fit a 2-light horizontal sliding sash window, each light containing four panes. To the east of the doorway is a 2-light window, which was formerly a 4-light window with recessed chamfered mullions; now, all but the central mullion has been removed, and it is set beneath a drip mould with label stops. A former window of similar size and detail has been infilled and modified to create a 19th-century doorway with a plain plank door that has a central glazed light.
The first floor features 2-light chamfered mullioned windows, which were originally 3-light, with four-paned window frames, sashes, and fixed lights in the end bays. Above the blocked doorway in the centre is a single window in a moulded frame. The east end has a single lower bay with a quoined ground-floor doorway and a flight of stone steps leading to a first-floor doorway, along with a rectangular first-floor window fitted with a metal small-paned window. The west end has a single lower bay with stacked stone-framed windows, a 19th-century sash window on the first floor, and a 20th-century top-vent window on the ground floor. There is also a blocked 3-light chamfered mullioned window at the apex of the east gable.
The rear elevation includes an offshoot to the west bay beneath a catslide roof, a small fire window for the central stack, and openings that were inserted in the 18th and 19th centuries. Inside, the farmhouse features exposed spine beams and joists, along with a 17th-century hearth that has a 19th-century range inserted.
