Description

The Old Toll House is a toll house that has been converted into a residence. It dates from the early 19th century and was altered in the mid-20th century. The building features a stuccoed sandstone exterior and a machine-tiled roof with overhanging eaves. It has a T-plan layout, with the main section oriented north-west to south-east and a central canted wing on the south-west elevation. There is a large external rubble chimney with offsets and a rebuilt brick stack on the north-eastern side.

The structure is single-storey and has a chamfered plinth. On the south-west front elevation, there are two windows in the canted wing located at the angled junction of the canted faces, which also connect to the main range. Both windows have hoodmoulds with returns; the north-west window is the original 19th-century multi-paned window, while the south-east window has been replaced with a 20th-century casement. It is likely that there was originally a doorway in the central face of the canted wing.

At the north-west end of the main range, there is a 20th-century two-light casement window, also with a hoodmould with returns. The window at the south-east end of this range has been replaced by a 20th-century flat-roofed bay window. A lean-to brick addition is located at the rear of the building. The Old Toll House is positioned on the old turnpike road from Gloucester to Leominster and faces the Ketch House and adjoining stables, which adds to its group value.
