Description
This building is an outbuilding, possibly once a malt-house, located about one yard south-west of the England's Gate Inn. It dates from the 17th century and was re-erected around 1830, with some alterations made in the mid-20th century. The structure is timber-framed with rendered infill, sitting on a tall sandstone rubble base, and features a machine-tiled roof. It consists of three framed bays aligned north to south, with two levels and a cellar.
The framing includes three rows of square panels extending from the sill to the wall-plate, with collar and tie-beam trusses supported by four struts at the gable ends. On the west side, there is a continuous row of eight 2-light windows at ground floor level, along with a 20th-century cellar door. The east side has two 2-light windows at ground floor level, the main entrance door, and another cellar door.
Inside, the roof is of the upper cruck type, which is typical of malt houses in this area from the 19th century. The continuous row of windows on the west side may have replaced ventilation louvres. A survey from 1828 indicates that the 17th-century frame was to be rebuilt on top of the raised sandstone base, and the building was subsequently re-roofed.
