Description

Primrose Cottage is a house located in Isle of Rhea, dating from the mid 17th century, with alterations and additions made in the mid 19th century and mid 20th century. The structure is timber-framed, featuring painted brick and rendered infill on a rubble base, topped with a corrugated asbestos roof. The house has two framed bays oriented north-west to south-east, with a large external rubble chimney and a brick stack at the north-west end. It is a single storey with an attic that includes half-dormers.

The framing consists of three panels from the sill to the wall-plate, with some short straight braces across the lower outer corners of the upper outer panels. The trusses include collar and tie-beam designs, with the south-east end truss featuring three struts beneath the collar and a V-strut in the apex.

On the south-west front elevation, the windows are 20th-century casements. There is a three-light window on the ground floor, a square stairlight, and a raking-top half-dormer with a two-light window. The main entrance, located to the right of center, has a 20th-century lean-to glazed timber porch and a glazed door. Attic lights are present in the gable ends. At the rear, there is a continuous rubble outshut that includes an external rubble chimney with a brick stack and a bread oven, likely a 19th-century kitchen addition. There is also a glazed 20th-century addition at the north-west end.
