Description
The stables located about five yards north-east of Englands Gate Inn were built around 1838 and altered around 1869. They are constructed from coursed sandstone rubble and feature a hipped concrete-tiled roof, forming an L-plan layout. The main range consists of three bays aligned north/south, with a smaller three-bay range attached to the north-east. The main range has two levels, and the east elevation displays openings with cambered heads. There are three upper-level windows with 2-light casements, although the central window is blocked by a painted sign. Below these windows, there are four ledged and battened doors, each with transom lights that include two glazing bars. An external flight of steps leads to the upper level on the west elevation. The north-east wing is a single storey and features three double doorways in its south elevation, with the outer doors having multi-paned transom lights, along with a lean-to outshut on the north elevation. Originally, there was a granary or hayloft above the stables. The building was modified in 1869 when windows were added, coinciding with its use as the club-room of the Court Arkwright. It is situated close to Englands Gate Inn and is included for its group value.
