Description
The Weir House and flanking walls is a Grade II listed building located in Bodenham. Originally built around 1730, it was a rebuilding of a 17th century or earlier structure and has undergone early 20th century alterations. The house is constructed of handmade brick on a sandstone base, with some sandstone walling on the rear and left side. It features plain tiled roofs, partly hipped, with large brick stacks at the ends. The building has two storeys and an attic, characterized by a dentilled eaves cornice.
The facade consists of one large central gable flanked by narrow hipped-roofed wings, arranged in a 1:3:1 bay configuration. The windows have gauged flat heads with dropped moulded keyblocks and are all glazing bar sashes with moulded architraves. In the central section, there are two ground floor and three first floor 18-pane sashes, along with a round-headed sash in the attic gable with sandstone imposts. The flanking wings contain narrow 12-pane sashes on both floors, although the first floor windows have been blocked. The central entrance features a 20th century gabled canopy supported by wrought iron brackets, a moulded architrave, and a 6-panelled door with the upper four panels glazed. At the rear, there is a continuous lean-to outshut with a cat-slide roof.
Inside, the central hall includes an oak open well staircase with turned balusters, moulded brackets, and a handrail, along with a panelled dado. The attic ceilings have ventilators, suggesting the house may have been used as maltings in the past. The flanking walls are made of brick with sandstone coping, varying in height from about 15 feet to 14 feet, each wall approximately six yards long and ending in square piers.
