Description
Wigley Farmhouse is a house dating from the early 17th century, with alterations and additions made in the 18th and 20th centuries. It is constructed from coursed rubble Coal Measures Sandstone, featuring quoins and ashlar dressings, coped gables with moulded kneelers, ridge and gable stone stacks, and a concrete tiled roof. The house has a T-plan layout with an off-centre lobby entrance.
The south elevation is two storeys high and has five bays. The central three-bay range, which has former quoined corners, is now part of the five-bay range, with the two end bays appearing to be later additions. The off-centre doorway, located at the east end by a former quoined corner, has plain stone jambs that are now heavily rendered and features a shallow bracketed canopy. It has a 20th-century glazed door.
To the east, there is an added bay with a six-light recessed chamfered mullioned window, which includes two major mullions and is topped by a drip mould. Above this, there is a three-light mullioned window from the same period. To the west of the doorway, there is a two-light flush mullioned window and a former two-light chamfered mullioned window that has had its mullion removed. Above this is a three-light chamfered mullioned window with widely spaced mullions. The next bay to the west features stacked three-light recessed chamfered mullioned windows. The west bay also has stacked windows, consisting of two lights, which are wider than the presumed earlier mullioned windows.
The east and west gables are rendered and each has two two-light wide-chamfered mullioned windows. The north elevation includes a projecting central gabled range with a 20th-century doorway and two former two-light 17th-century chamfered mullioned windows above. One of these first-floor openings has the mullion missing, and there is a blocked attic light above. The roof on the east side of the rear elevation is a catslide roof, while the right side has a roof that is the same height as the front pitch. There is also a 20th-century single-storey gabled extension at the west end. The interior of the farmhouse has been completely remodelled.
