L-Shaped Range Of Barns Approximately 50M North-West Of Whitley Grange

This is an L-shaped range of barns located approximately 50 meters north-west of Whitley Grange. The barns date from the mid-17th century to the late 17th century, with later additions and alterations. They are timber framed, featuring sections with red brick infill and parts that are weatherboarded, topped with plain tile and corrugated iron roofs. The barns are arranged in an L-shape around the north and west sides of the farmyard. The west range serves as a threshing barn with four bays, while the north side includes two barns with three and four bays, the eastern one likely built slightly later and featuring an inserted loft. The framing consists of irregular square and rectangular panels with long straight tension braces in the threshing barn. The western barn on the north range has two wide rectangular panels at the eaves above a high brick plinth, while the eastern barn has single tall rectangular panels, also above a high brick plinth. Inside, the roof structures of both ranges have been partially reconstructed but still retain Queen-post trusses. The barns are obscured to the south by a complex of late 20th-century farm buildings as noted during the re-survey in 1985.
