Description

The White House is a farmhouse that has been converted into a guest house. It likely dates from the early 17th century, with later additions and alterations. The building features a timber frame, much of which has been renewed and part of it painted to imitate timber, with plastered and painted brick infill and a machine tile roof. The hall consists of three and a half framed bays and has a roughly central stack, with a two-bay cross-wing projecting to the left. It is one storey high with an attic. The framing includes three rectangular panels from the cill to the wall-plate, with long and short straight tension braces in the cross-wing. The windows are irregularly placed, featuring two gabled full dormers on the hall range, with three-light late 19th-century casements below on the left and centre, and blocked openings in between. The cross-wing has one 19th-century casement on the first floor, along with one casement and two fixed-light windows on the ground floor. The entrance is through a 20th-century door located in a wooden porch at the angle between the hall and the cross-wing. A prominent rendered ridge stack is situated to the right, with a smaller ridge stack on the cross-wing. Attached to the right-hand end is a former stable built of red brick in the mid-19th century, which has been painted black and white to imitate timber framing.
