Description

The Church of St Thomas is a parochial chapel, now no longer in use, built in 1840 by Edward Haycock. It is constructed from coursed local limestone rubble and features machine tile roofs. The design is in a plain lancet style, comprising a nave, chancel, south vestry, west porch, and a bellcote. The nave is buttressed in four bays, with a lean-to vestry located in the east bay on the south side. All windows are broad lancets, and the gabled west porch has a gabled bellcote above, which houses a single bell. The chancel is short, consisting of one bay with a broad lancet window in the east wall.

Inside, the chapel retains its original open benches and a west gallery supported by plain cast-iron columns. Most other fittings date from the late 19th to early 20th century, including a plain reading desk, a stone pulpit with marble shafts, and a slender octagonal font, all from around 1880. The base of the communion table is from the mid-17th century, and early 17th-century oak panelling has been added to the north and south walls when the chancel was remodeled internally around 1929. The chapel was built on land donated by Thomas Harries of Cruckton in 1838, at a cost of £949, which was raised by public subscription. It previously served the second portion of the Pontesbury parish.
