Description

This is an L-shaped barn located approximately 10 meters south of The Buildings Farmhouse, likely built around 1700 with some later repairs and alterations. The barn is timber-framed with red brick infill and a high plinth, topped with corrugated-iron roofs that have raised verges. It forms an L-shape around the south and west sides of the farmyard and has two levels.

The framing consists of square panels, with three panels from the cill to the wall plate in the south range and two in the west range, featuring long, straight tension braces. There is a single bay addition of 18th-century red brick at the east end of the south range. The west range has scattered segmental-headed doorways at the plinth level, while the south range features flat-arched doorways with hatches in the framing panels. A wide threshing entrance is located at the far left of the west range, in the angle with the south range, and has opposing doorways with cambered heads. Both ranges include cross-shaped air vents in the framing panels and a small mutilated louvred dovecote at the gable end of the west range.

Inside, the south range has a staggered double-purlin roof spanning five bays, with long straight braces connecting the girding beam to the tie beams and raking struts from the tie beams to the principal rafters, along with collars between the upper sets of purlins. There is a central king-post truss in the bay at the angle between the ranges, and continuous lofts are present in both the south range and the west range to the right of the threshing entrance. The roof structure of the west range could not be inspected during the last survey in May 1986. The barn is included for its group value.
