Description

The L-shaped barn at Bank Farm dates from the late 17th century and was partly rebuilt in the mid to late 18th century, with further alterations made later. It is timber framed with red brick infill on a high brick plinth on the sides facing the farmyard, while the gable ends and rear are also constructed of red brick. The barn features a slate roof on the west range and plain tiles on the north-east range, with raised verges at the gable end of the west range.

The barn is arranged in an L-plan and has two levels. The framing consists of two square panels with long straight tension braces extending from the raised cill to the wall-plate. Each panel includes cross-shaped air vents, and there are lozenge-shaped air vents on the plinth, although these are now mostly infilled. The north-east range has an eaves hatch at the far left, with doors to the left and far left. There is a wide former threshing entrance featuring full-height double doors at the angle with the west range, which has three eaves hatches, five doors (one of which is now blocked), and an inserted cart bay to the left.

Inside, the north-east range has a double-purlin roof supported by five bays, featuring a mix of Queen-strut, Queen-post, and King-post trusses. There is a timber framed partition between the first and second bays from the left. The west range also has a double-purlin roof, but it is divided into six short bays with three Queen-post trusses on the right. It includes a Queen-strut truss in the fourth bay from the right and a King-post truss with a timber framed partition below that divides two bays spanning the north-east range. A continuous loft is present in the four right bays.
