Description
Worthen Hall Farmhouse is a farmhouse built around 1590 for Richard Powell, with later additions and alterations. The building is roughcast, concealing a timber frame with brick infill, and features slate roofs. It has a T-plan layout, consisting of a gabled cross-wing on the left and a hall range that appears to have three and a half framed bays on the right. The farmhouse is two storeys high with gable-lit attics.
In terms of framing, parts of square panels are visible beneath the render on the cross-wing, which has an overhanging first floor above the hall range. The windows are of 20th-century design, with one casement on each floor of the cross-wing, three on the first floor of the hall range, and one on either side of a roughly central gabled porch that features a round-headed outer arch. The inner door is a six-panel design with a rectangular barred overlight.
The back wall of the hall range has two large external stone stacks with red brick shafts, and there is a similar lateral stack on the cross-wing. Although the interior could not be inspected during the resurvey in December 1985, it is reported to have original oak panelling, curious painted decoration in the attics, and deep-chamfered ceiling beams throughout. Richard Powell, who was a wealthy merchant, served as Bailiff of Shrewsbury in 1573 and 1591.
