Description
The Worthen War Memorial is a First World War memorial that was unveiled in September 1920, with a later addition for the Second World War. It is made of Darley Dale stone and is prominently positioned in the village, set back from the road. The memorial features a simple Latin cross with a carved foot, standing on a tall plinth that has a moulded top and a three-stepped square base.
On the front (south-east) face of the plinth, there is a bronze plaque inscribed with the words: “LEST WE FORGET”/ ERECTED 1920/ TO THE MEMORY OF THOSE FROM/ THE PARISH OF WORTHEN/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE/ GREAT WAR/ 1914-1918/ (NAMES). Below this, a second plaque commemorates those who fell in the Second World War, reading: THIS TABLET IS ADDED/ IN MEMORY OF THOSE WHO FELL/ IN THE SECOND WORLD WAR/ 1938-1945/ (NAMES).
In front of the memorial, there are painted iron railings and a pedestrian gate.
