Description

The L-shaped barn, located approximately 30 meters north of Walford Hall, dates from the late 17th century and has undergone later additions and alterations. It is constructed with a timber frame and features red brick infill on a red sandstone block plinth. The eastern range is partly weatherboarded, while the northern range has been partially rebuilt in mid-19th century red brick. The roof is covered with machine tiles.

The barn is arranged in an L-plan around the north and east sides of the farmyard. The framing of the north range consists of square panels, three from the cill to the wall-plate, supported by short straight tension braces. The east range has a mix of slightly irregular square and rectangular panels, with five from the cill to the wall-plate and long straight tension braces. The back wall features tall vertical posts with long straight tension braces.

The north range includes a stable door to the left and a segmental-headed window to the right of the center, along with a segmental-headed stable door at the angle with the east range. The east range has several scattered doorways and eaves hatches, with an infilled threshing entrance to the left of center.

Inside, both ranges have single-purlin roofs with short straight wind braces and a combination of queen-post and queen-strut trusses. The east range has five bays, with king struts at the gable ends and a 'double' truss at the first truss from the north. The north range features V-struts from the collar to the gable end.
