Description

The barn range at Manor Farm is a structure that likely dates from the late 17th century, with an addition around 1700 and further alterations, including an outshut to the west and rebuilding of the south end. It features timber-framing and reddish-brown brick set on a blue lias stone plinth, topped with a plain-tile roof.

Originally, the barn was probably L-shaped, with the main range running north-south and a shorter eastward projection at the north end. The north-south range appears to have been truncated at the south, and a timber-framed extension was added to the east end, along with further ranges and outshuts to the west and rear, creating a T-shaped plan.

On the exterior, the main range and the east range display small square timber-framing. The east range has opposing plank doors on the north and south sides, six-pane windows on the south, and pitching doors at the gable end. The west end features a plank door. The main range has opposing threshing doors at the north end, where it connects to the subsidiary range, with split plank doors and blocked breathers. The rear range has a catslide roof, while the west range has a half-hipped roof, with gabled roofs elsewhere.

Inside, the main range contains collar-and-tie-beam trusses with queen struts, and purlins that are carried behind the principals and level with the collar, along with wind braces. The east range has two massive posts or studs that support the bressumer and may have originally served as an open cart-shed.

The barn range, along with Manor Farmhouse, the cart shed with stable and hayloft, and the stables, forms a cohesive group of associated buildings.
