Description
The Old Shop is a house dating from the late 17th century or early 18th century, with later additions from the late 19th and late 20th centuries. It features a timber frame built on a stone plinth, with rendered infill panels and red brick that has been painted on the north side. The roof is covered with plain tiles. The building consists of one framed bay along with later extensions and has one storey plus an attic.
The north front includes a lower timber-framed section to the right, which has two 20th-century casement windows. The right-hand gable end displays a possibly reproduction Sun Fire Insurance plate (No.1710) and features an exposed collar and tie-beam truss with queen struts and V-struts. The left-hand block has two gabled semi-dormers with 20th-century two-light casements, along with external brick stacks. There is a central segmental-headed stair window and a ground-floor segmental-headed window to the left, which also has a 20th-century two-light casement. To the right, there is a 20th-century half-glazed door with a gabled 20th-century brick porch. The rear has 20th-century additions that project at right angles to the left.
Although the interior has not been inspected, it is reputed to contain a timber-framed firehood, known as a fumbrell, which is a rare survival.
