Description
This is a late 17th-century cottage located in Upton Magna, with 20th-century additions. It is timber-framed with red brick infill and has a plain tile roof. The cottage is of two framed bays, designed as an end-lobby-entry house, and stands one storey high with an attic. A brick end stack is integrated on the left-hand side, and there are two gabled dormers with 2-light wooden casements in the attic. The timber framing consists of square panels, three from the sole-plate to the wall-plate. The front elevation has two windows with wooden-framed 2-light metal casements, and a boarded door is set into the left-hand gable end. Inside, there is an exposed collar and tie-beam roof structure with queen struts and V-struts. A 20th-century one-storey lean-to addition has been built on the left-hand side, and a rear entrance has been created. The interior also features a central upper cruck roof truss, a ground-floor timber-framed partition, and a ground-floor room with a chamfered beam featuring ogee stops, wide joists, and a large open fireplace. A 17th-century newel staircase is located at the rear of the stack. A blocked doorway exists at the south end of the east wall; the current entrance is in the south wall.
