Description
Cruck Cottage is a cottage that likely dates from the 15th or 16th century, with alterations made around 1600 and in the late 19th century. It is constructed using timber framing in cruck style, with painted brick nogging, and has a corrugated iron roof over thatch. The building is probably a former open hall house consisting of three framed bays, oriented north-south. It has one storey and an attic. There is an integral brick chimney stack at the north end and another integral brick stack in the southeast corner. The east side features a gabled full-dormer, likely from the late 16th or 17th century, which includes a three-light casement window. The framing consists of square panels, with two panels extending from the sole-plate to the wall-plate. The east front has four windows, which are 19th and 20th-century one- and two-light casements. There are boarded doors in each gable end. Inside, there are two full cruck trusses of the Alcock apex type V, along with chamfered beams and joists, and a 17th-century newel staircase.
