Description
Wood Farmhouse is a Grade II listed farmhouse dating from the early 17th century, with later additions and alterations. It features a timber frame set on an uncoursed limestone rubble and brick plinth, with plaster and painted brick infill and cladding, topped by a slate roof. The building has one storey and an attic, consisting of three framed bays. The framing is exposed on the left side of the front, with one square panel above a high inserted brick plinth, and at the rear, there are three square panels from the cill to the wall-plate, supported by one long, slightly curving tension brace. The right-hand bay has been largely rebuilt in brick at both the front and rear. The fenestration is irregular, featuring two late 19th-century casements on each side of a central boarded door, with contemporary gabled eaves dormers above to the left and right. There is a blocked door to the right, and red brick end stacks, one integral to the left and the other external to the right, with a toothed band at the base of the tall shaft.
At the rear, there is an early 19th-century rubblestone and brick lean-to, along with a mid-19th-century lean-to abutting the right gable end and stack. Inside, the timber frame remains largely intact, including a cross wall immediately to the right of the entrance. The left ground-floor room features a moulded cross beam with run-out stops, and a chamfered wooden lintel above the fireplace with an external stack. A probably mid-18th-century winder staircase against the back wall has a carved pointed newel. The roof structure is a Queen-strut design in three bays, with a truss immediately to the right of the entrance that has a cambered tie beam.
