Description
Nos. 19-23 on St John's Hill in Shrewsbury is a terrace of five houses built around 1750. Constructed from brick with plain tiled roofs, the houses are three stories high and share an identical mirrored plan across the row, featuring a three-window range with an outer doorway. The doorways are segmentally arched and framed by heavy moulded architraves, with sidelights that create a Palladian composition. The six-panelled doors are mostly recessed with panelled rebates, which appear to be a later modification. Each doorway has unique detailing, including incised decoration on the architrave of No. 21, a pedimented case on No. 20, and stained-glass leaded sidelights in Nos. 22 and 23. The houses have sash windows, with some retaining the original 12-paned lights, while others have been replaced. No. 21 features mullioned and transomed French windows with a latticed cast-iron balcony added in the early 19th century on the first floor. The eaves cornice is adorned with wood modillions, and there are axial stacks. Inside, some original staircases and panelling are still present.
