Description

A pair of houses built around 1730, located on St John’s Hill in Shrewsbury. They were constructed as a single building and are of brick construction with a plain tiled roof. The houses are two storeys high and arranged symmetrically, each with a three-window front and a separate front door.

Number 26 features a six-panelled door with a fanlight set within a moulded architrave, which is further ornamented with curved console brackets to the cornice. Number 27 has a four-panelled door with an overlight displaying interlace tracery within a lugged architrave. The windows are sash windows; those in number 26 have twelve panes, while those in number 27 have two panes, all with curved tops. A left-hand window on the first floor of number 26 has been altered to include a French window with a flat-arched brick surround, opening onto a cast-iron balcony that was likely added around 1800. The eaves feature a moulded cornice with modillion detailing. Dormer windows with alternating triangular and segmentally-arched pediments light the attic space. An axial stack provides ventilation.
