WROXETER C.P. NORTON CROSS ROADS Nos.2 and 3

II

Pair of cottages, now shop. Late C17, remodelled in the late C18/early C19, possibly by John Nash. Timber framed, partly rendered, with rendered and wattle and daub infill panels; half-hipped thatched roof. 2 framed bays; remodelling in the Gothick style. One storey and attic. Central eyebrow eaves-dormer with 3-light leaded casement. Framing: square panels, 2 from sole-plate to wall-plate; short straight corner braces and long straight tension braces. 2-window front, 2-light Gothick wooden casements with leaded lights, Y-tracery, and boarded external shutters; 2 central boarded doors with moulded architraves and leaded Gothick overlights with Y-tracery. Interior: central collar and tie-beam truss with queen struts; timber framed cross-wall with wattle and daub infill panels; first floor in left- hand bay has been renewed, first floor in right-hand bay has chamfered beam and joists; C17 newel staircase; C17 fireplace in north-east corner has chamfered lintel with ogee-stops, and late C19 beaten copper Art Nouveau surround from the former Raven Hotel in Shrewsbury. A circa 1900 photograph in the shop shows the front of the cottages rendered and the former left- hand corner stack. The pair of cottages was probably remodelled by Nash as part of a picturesque village scheme including No.3-7 (consec.), Atcham (q.v.).
