Description

This building is a former barn and attached cow house, located approximately 35 metres north of Lower House and Lower House Cottage, which was formerly known as Lower House Farmhouse. It likely dates from the mid to late 18th century. The structure features a weatherboarded and corrugated-iron-clad timber frame set on a high 20th-century red brick plinth, topped with a corrugated-iron roof. It consists of three framed bays.

The framing includes widely spaced studs with long straight tension braces. On the west front, there is a central 20th-century casement window and an unglazed opening slightly off-centre to the right, accompanied by a pair of flanking two-leaf boarded doors. The cow house to the right is constructed of coursed yellow sandstone rubble with brick dressings and has a slate roof. It is two storeys high, featuring a toothed brick eaves cornice, a small loft window to the right, and a boarded loft door that is off-centre to the left. There is also a ground floor window off-centre to the left and a pair of two-leaf boarded doors. The right-hand gable end contains a former dovecote with blocked entrances and ledges.

Inside the barn, there are tie-beam roof trusses with raking struts, single staggered purlins, and cross frames with central posts, along with evidence of former angle and tension braces. The building is included for its group value.
