Description

This building is a barn and cowhouse, likely dating from the 18th century, located about 25 yards southwest of Upper House Farmhouse. It features a mix of rubble, part timber-frame construction, weatherboards, woven panels, and a roof made of stone slate and corrugated iron. The structure consists of six bays, with a three-bay central section, a wider two-bay adjoining part to the east that has catslide extensions to the north, and a single wider bay to the west. The external walls are primarily rubble, except for the north wall, which has "loop-hole" ventilators on either side of full-height opposing doors. The north wall is constructed with three panels high from the cill to the wall-plate, featuring woven panels and three purlins. Inside, there is a threshing floor behind the full-height doors, and the trusses are of two types: vertical struts from ties to collars, and raking struts from the tie-beam, beneath which is a horizontal rail that supports partition studs. There is a woven panel partition dividing the central and eastern parts. The east elevation is characteristic of the area, displaying three symmetrically placed doors in a large rubble gable end that leads to a cowhouse containing a rack and trough.
