Description

ELLESMERE RURAL C.P. HIGHER RIDGE SJ 33 SE 8/120 Barn approx. 20m south of - Lower House Farmhouse - II Barn, now cowhouse. C14 or C15 remodelled mid-to late C19 with later alterations. Cruck-framed with outer walls largely rebuilt in C19 and C20 brick; slate roof. Single storey. Framing: thick vertical posts and wall-plate probably medieval but light horizontal members and long straight tension brace to front are C19. Three doorways to front, wide to right. Interior. Single through-purlin roof in 3 bays with brick to gable ends and 2 true cruck trusses, right with straight collar and yoke but left with mortices only. Right truss also has mortices to inner faces of blades but no mortices on underside of collar to suggest former presence of arch bracing. Original spur from rear blade of left truss to wall-plate. The trusses are neither chamfered nor smoke-blackened, suggesting that the building has always been agricultural. Inserted loft to left bay. Lower House Farmhouse is not included in this list.
