Description

This building is a barn, now used as a cowhouse, located approximately 20 metres south of Lower House Farmhouse. It dates from the 14th or 15th century and was remodelled in the mid to late 19th century, with later alterations. The barn is cruck-framed, with outer walls largely rebuilt in 19th and 20th century brick, and it has a slate roof. It is a single storey structure.

The framing features thick vertical posts and a wall-plate that are likely medieval, while the lighter horizontal members and a long straight tension brace at the front are from the 19th century. There are three doorways at the front, with the widest located to the right.

Inside, the barn has a single through-purlin roof divided into three bays, with brick gable ends and two true cruck trusses. The right truss has a straight collar and yoke, while the left truss has only mortices. The right truss also features mortices on the inner faces of the blades, but there are no mortices on the underside of the collar, indicating that there may have been arch bracing in the past. An original spur connects the rear blade of the left truss to the wall-plate. The trusses are neither chamfered nor smoke-blackened, which suggests that the building has always been used for agricultural purposes. There is an inserted loft in the left bay. Lower House Farmhouse is not included in this listing.
