Description
Pool Cottage is a house dating from the early 17th century, which was remodeled later in the 17th century and underwent some restoration in the mid-20th century. It features a timber-frame construction with rendered infill and has been extended in brick, topped with a machine tile roof. The building is arranged in an L-plan, with a cross-wing extending to the south and another range to the east that has been shortened, as indicated by blocked mortices in the gable end.
The main stack is made of rubble and has two linked brick shafts placed laterally on the west wall of the cross-wing. The north front is two storeys high, with an attic in the gabled cross-wing on the right, which was previously lit by a blocked 3-light window. The first floor has four windows: a 2-light casement on the left, followed by two single-light casements and a 3-light casement. On the ground floor, there are a pair of single-light casements to the left and two 3-light casements. The entrance, located to the left of centre, features a 20th-century ledged and boarded door.
The framing of the cross-wing is jettied, supported by a moulded bressummer on curved brackets that rise from pilasters with capitals. The central window has a moulded sill, with a carved figure on a stud below, holding an axe in his right hand. The ground floor has two square panels high, while the first floor has four rectangular panels high, with the two upper central panels featuring curved nibbed braces. The roof truss includes a strut on each side of the window, with a lintel formed by a high collar and nibbed curved struts above. The other range has four square panels high with straight angle braces.
