Description
Clear Brook is a farmhouse that has been divided into two tenements. It features a late 16th-century rear wing, an early 17th-century main block, and 20th-century additions. The structure includes partly rendered timber-framing with decorative framing in the gables of the main block, along with sections of wattle-and-daub and painted brick infill. The roof is made of stone slate. The earlier wing consists of three bays aligned east to west, with the later wing added to the west end and facing west. There are pairs of rear lateral stacks on the main wing and one lateral stack on the south side of the rear wing, all featuring decorative brick shafts that have been partly rebuilt. The central entrance leads to a central stairwell. The building has two storeys and attics.
On the west front, there are three gables with decorative ornamental framing, each containing leaded 2-light casements. The first floor has four 2-light cross-casements with ovolo moulded mullions, along with one similar window to the left and a 3-light window to the right of a ledged door that has a 2-light overlight. Inside, the farmhouse retains a staircase with decorative splat balusters and square newels with finials. The main ground floor rooms feature moulded ceiling beams with ogee stops. The main block is an almost completely intact example of an early 17th-century symmetrically planned gentry house.
