Description
Bridge Cottages is a house that has been divided into tenements. The main hall dates back to the 14th century, while the cross-wing was added in the 17th century, with some alterations and additions made in the 20th century. The building features square panelled timber-framing with some painted brick infill on a sandstone rubble plinth, topped with tiled roofs and a sandstone stack.
The three-bay hall runs north to south, with the cross-wing to the south and the entrance located on the east front. There is a large axial stack in the hall and a lateral stack in the cross-wing. The building has two storeys, with the roof of the hall raised by one panel. On the east front, the upper floor of the cross-wing jetties out, supported by two curved brackets. The gable end of the cross-wing on the left has a 2-light 20th-century casement window and a 3-light window to the left of a 20th-century ledged door. The hall range on the right features one 3-light and two 2-light 20th-century casement windows, along with two 2-light casement windows and one 6-pane window on the ground floor. The north gable end reveals a cruck truss, and the interior retains another truss with open arched bracing and cusped details above the collar.
