Description

The William Mathews memorial is a chest tomb located approximately 15 meters southeast of the south porch of the Church of St Deinst. It dates from the late 18th century or early 19th century and is constructed of ashlar stone. The tomb features a moulded plinth that is now partly submerged, and it has an elegant moulded, slightly hipped capping with gadrooned edging. There is a rectangular inscription panel surrounded by a shaped egg and dart inner surround, with floral motifs in the corners. The panel is flanked by balusters that also have gadrooned capping. This memorial commemorates William Mathews, who died in 1780.
