Description

Shelwick Court is a farmhouse with a core dating back to the 15th century, which was significantly enlarged in the 17th century and underwent further alterations in the 19th century. It was restored between 1983 and 1984. The building is timber-framed and sits on a sandstone rubble plinth, featuring a coursed sandstone rubble facade with later brick dressings and 20th-century weatherboard cladding on the rear. The roofs are tiled. Originally rectangular, the farmhouse now has an L-shaped plan due to the demolition of the north-west corner during restoration.

The south front has a string course and a weatherboarded gable end on the right side of the wing. There are five cross casement windows and a central six-panelled door. Inside, the restoration has revealed the roof of the 15th-century great chamber, which consists of three bays with main tie-beam trusses and intermediate open arch-braced trusses. The members are chamfered and cusped, with chamfered through purlins and wind-braces. The east wall features ornamental framing with cusped bracing within curvilinear diamond fields, and the main posts are moulded with stops. The restoration lowered the floor in this room to expose the stops. It is suggested that the 15th-century wing may have been re-erected on this site and could have once been part of a larger house, with the decorative east wing possibly adjoining a former hall block; there is no evidence of smoke blackening on the timbers.
