Description
Cox Cottage is an early 19th-century cottage located on Venns Lane in Hereford. It is constructed of brick and features a hipped thatched roof, with a brick stack at the end and another at the rear. The cottage has two storeys and a three-window range, with two-light casements on the left side that date from the 20th century and have Gothick heads. The central entrance consists of a 19th-century, three-panel door with a Gothick motif. To the right of the entrance is a blocked opening with a plain light and a leaded light casement featuring a Gothick head, while there is a blind opening to the left. All these elements are set under segmental arches. The cottage has three dressed stone and brick pilaster-buttresses and a stone storey band. On the right side, there is a 20th-century, two-light casement, and on the left side, there is a Gothick light with an added casement above a 19th-century, eight-over-eight sash window under a segmental arch. At the rear, there is a late 20th-century thatched wing. This cottage was purpose-built as a home and studio for the painter David Cox in 1817, and he lived there until 1823, when he moved to No. 47 Venn's Lane.
