Description

This is a pair of mid-19th century houses on Aylestone Hill, Hereford. They are built of cement with a hipped Welsh slate roof and have two rendered ridge stacks and stacks to the rear. The houses have two storeys and a four-window front. The windows are 6/6 sashes, with deep eaves and pilasters. A verandah with cast-iron supports links two canted bays with margin-glazed casements and crenellated parapets; the verandah itself is grooved stucco. Recessed lean-to wings have single 6/6 sashes above part-glazed panelled doors and ornamented fanlights, set within plain doorcases with moulded hoods. The left returned side has a further roughcast wing with a 6/6 sash, and a roughcast and rendered stack. On the right returned side are two 6/6 sashes.

Number 78 contains a dogleg staircase with turned balusters, and a winder stair leads to the attic. The first floor has four-panel doors. On the ground floor, features include ceiling cornices and a rose, panelled shutters, architraves to the windows, a mutilated cast-iron fireplace, four-panel doors, and panelling. Number 80 similarly has a dogleg staircase with stick balusters and turned newels. The first floor features two 19th-century fireplaces, two four-panel doors, architraves, and five six-panel doors. The ground floor contains ceiling coving, skirting, alcoves with cupboards, an architrave to a 20th-century double door, a six-panel door, a cupboard with a shelved alcove, a tiled floor, and a four-panel door to a garage. A plank door provides access to a cellar, which has stone lining, a brick vault, wine bins, a plank door with a light, and chamfered ceiling beams.
